Beginning first, what is Public Relations (PR)? Many definitions are floating around the world wide web. The dictionary defines PR as the actions of a corporation, store,government or individual in promoting goodwill between itself and the public, the community, employees, customers, etc. If that definition doesn’t satisfy you we can turn our eyes to Rex Harlow. Harlow is an American academic who in 1972 gave the claim of producing the first all-inclusive definition of PR. He stated he had researched more than 472 definitions of PR that had emerged since the early 1900’s up until his time (1972). He took the common elements from each definition and combined them to give us this:
“ Public relations is a distinctive management function which helps establish and maintain mutual lines of communication, understanding, acceptance, and cooperation between an organization and its publics.” (Harlow, 1976).
