A strategy to bring Germany down was to bring her allies down. The First Lord of the Admiralty of the British government, Winston Churchill, made the decision to launch and attack on one of Germany’s major allies, Turkey. His plan was to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula that way they would also be able to control the Dardanelles. They hoped that they would then be able to seize control of Constantinople (now known as Istanbul) leading onto the fall of Turkey’s capital, Ankara, then hopefully the downfall of Turkey. Churchill also knew that to capture the Dardanelles would not only give then access to Constantinople but they would be able to get supplies through to Russia, an ally of the British Empire. The final phase of the plan was while the British Empire was attempting to bring down Turkey to also invade Austria-Hungary, another one of Germany’s main allies. Churchill believed that by bringing down Germany’s allies that the war would be shortened and hopefully give the allies an advantage. The ANZACs were the first to land at Gallipoli at a beach to later be known as ANZAC Cove. Therefore the ANZACs were the principal land force for the allies at the beginning and they were later joined by forces from other countries and they were fighting the Ottoman Empire
