Another pleasing feature of the book was that the author provided plenty of background information towards the first part of the story. Authors sometimes tend to make the reader wait for a long time before explaining the setting, but that was not the case here. Throughout the beginning chapters of the novel, the reader absorbed all kinds of fascinating information about the setting, which, as we previously expressed, is a great way to keep readers interested. Our group felt that the way the author presented the background information was a positive factor because it helped us gain a better understanding of the society, enabling us with the ability to better comprehend the story.

For example, the ceremony of twelve was interrupted with a flashback to when Jonas and his age group were toddlers. It was interesting and entertaining, and even had some relevance to what was taking place. However it interrupted the ceremony. That was the reader’s main focus of attention, and it was annoying that we were interrupted during an essential part of the story. The flashbacks in the novel were often in inconvenient places. Feeling that this sidetracked the course and progress of the story, our group thought that the author should not have included so many inconvenient
