Even Though, Joad were blindly fighting for survival at the beginning with no experience but their suffering along the way eventually open their eyes to the world. Grandpa Joad died unwillingly separated from his homeland which was the first casualty of the family to fight to survive. Grandma died shortly after Grandpa’s death.
