My personal experience with culture is a bit different from the typical person. Growing up I was immersed in the American culture but also the Guyanese culture. My parents are from the country Guyana were I was born as well, so at home there was a strong influence from the ways my parents had grown up. We immigrated here when I was three so I was grew up going to school in America and I was influenced by this culture as well. Lillian Comas-Diaz’s mentions in her article that woman in the Latin culture ae viewed as helpers. They are the ones, who help raise their friends and families kids, they become god mothers they help their community etcetera which causing an expectation on the whole female population. This expectation causes females to mold into the stereotype of the helpers. It is easy to relate to this culture because of being raised in the Guyanese culture. This causes many females to conform to this stereotype. Women take on nurturing roles at home but also in their careers. From the time they are born girls are influenced by media as well as the culture they are raised in. If most of the women in a girl’s life take on a nurturing role in both aspects of their life, it seems like the girl will associate any type of career that involves being nurturing or helping with women. I’m sure that there are some studies to prove this theory but I’m just going off of what I’ve learned. This view of women as helpers by men, girls, and even females causes occupations to be predominantly female. When girls learn that their mothers, god moms, and other females around them are in a certain career that requires a certain role that they only know women to do they start to associate females with certain professions.
