The horrors that existed in places like these camps are unmeasurable, and the had an indescribable effect on civilians, officials, POW’s, and people from all over the world. In order to put this event into perspective it is necessary to first tell the story of one famous little girl who was directly impacted by the Holocaust, and her name is Anne Frank. She was born on June 12, 1929, in Germany, where she lived in Amsterdam with her family. Due to the fact that the Nazi party was persecuting Jews, Anne and her family went into hiding for about two years. While they were in hiding, Anne wrote her experiences down in her journal that her parents gave her on June 12, 1942. However, on July 5, 1942, her family received an official notification to report to a labour camp located in Germany. Anne and her family went into hiding in empty rooms located in the back of Otto Frank 's company, also known as the Secret Annex. One of the most detrimental camps from this time period that stands out above the rest, is Auschwitz-Birkenau. This camp was established in 1940, and it was located in Oswiecim, Poland. This was the largest of all the Nazi death camps across Europe and could hold upwards of 150,000 inmates at any given time. In addition, it was first ran by a man named Rudolph Hoss, who had the help of SS officials. Auschwitz-Birkenau was planned to be used to intimidate Polish individuals, and prevent any opposition to Nazi Germany’s control. In addition, this camp would be used to relocated those that were living in Upper Silesia, due to the fact that it had previously housed individuals who were thought to be pure jews.
