I. INTRODUCTION
I.1. Background
From generation to generation, literary work develops continuously. As we
know literature is a feeling, experience or imagination of human life. Literary
work which is written in the form of beautiful words is important to many people
because it can gives happiness of the life. According to the Oxford Advance
Learner’s Dictionary, literature is the writings that are valued as works of art,
especially fiction, drama, and poetry.
Short story which is one of the literary works has its own way to entertain the
reader and can gives the reader pleasure, enjoyment and satisfaction. Those

IV.1.1. Simile
Simile is a stated comparison of two similar things introduce by the words
like or as.
1. “but my mother’s hair, my mother’s hair, like little rosettes, like little
candy circles all curly and pretty because she pinned it all in pin-curls
all day” (page 6)
In this case Esperanza compares her mother’s hair with the little
rosettes and little candy. The statement above has the connotative
meaning that her mother’s hair is cute and sweet. She also looks beautiful
when it is curly.
IV.1.2. Metaphor
Metaphor is an implied, or an expression that is used in a new sense, on
the basis of similarity between its literal sense and new thing situation.
1. “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor.” (page 9)
In this metaphor Esperanza compares herself to a red balloon. The
phrase a red balloon express herself who has the similarity. The phrase a
