The Homo-Faber concept is articulated by Hannah Arendt and Max Scheler referring to humans as controlling the environment through tools. Homo-Faber applies know-how to their environment as one would apply a tool. As a result, the fabrication of categorization of genders is a product of this idea. The fabrication may be an illusion to their survival which can have detrimental impacts on their thinking (Swift, 2013, p.359). In relation to Maslow 's hierarchy of needs, once physical survival is met the need to feel a sense of belonging and safety emerges. Also, the idea of creating categorizations as a tool is a result of this psychological matter. In order to survive, Rwandans as Homo-Fabers established this tool. In humanity, survival is the ultimate achievement. The pre-genocide Rwandan society created the system which to create infrastructures for dealing with life’s various demands and challenges. The taxonomic method for assessing relationships between phenomena, once popularized by the botanist Linnaeus, allows for the creation of a grid on which ranges of data can be displayed and analyzed (Green, Bohannan & Whitaker, 2008, p.1039) Therefore, male and female qualities that form gender as a concept are an invention of taxonomic tool. The technique of taxonomy is used to separate a variety of related concepts into meaningful categories based on varying specified criteria that are supposed to differentiate essential differences and similarities (Ibid). The characteristics in the criteria target are necessary components of the objects in question. For example, in pre-genocide and post-genocide Rwanda, males are given a criterion trait of rationality, selflessness, and risk-takers. While the defining characteristics of femininity are somewhat universally identical, some patterns exist: gentleness, empathy, sensitivity, caring, sweetness, compassion, tolerance, nurturance, deference are traits that have traditionally been cited as feminine according to the Rwandan society. The male traits are associated with physical strength while female traits are associated with nurture and appeal. The criteria categorization attaches each gender with a set of traits to follow.
