According to Berger (2016), the main reasons that people decide they no longer want to live, involve the loss of independence and dignity. They find it extremely hard to deal with such a change in their “normal” lives, that it becomes unbearable. After watching the episode of “The Suicide Plan” by Navasky and O’Connor (2012) that aired on PBS, I began to understand why some would have the feelings that they had had enough of their present circumstances, and wanted to leave this world peacefully. I found that there are several states here in the U.S. that allow this type of support. The states that currently allow physician assisted suicide in the U.S. are New Mexico, Oregon, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Many of these patients have been diagnosed as terminally ill and know that they do not have much time left.
