With the appropriate regulations set in place to monitor the use of nuclear technology, the impact of this energy source on the environment has the ability to be an overwhelming benefit to our society. The generation of nuclear power emits rather low amounts of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. Carbon dioxide emissions have a positive correlation between climate change, therefore, nuclear power generation has the capability to diminish the impact of this environmental change. The idea that technology can improve how our environment thrives connects with the discussions presented in Human-Built World by Thomas P. Hughes. The notion of a technological fix presented by Hughes focuses on the logical approaches that connect technology and the natural world. The direct correlation of complex reasoning and chaotic disasters only proves that simplification is the only logical response. Simplification is emphasized in Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed, when James Scott states that “engineers, planners, and other professionals who are committed to applying science and mastering nature tend to reduce a complex, multivariable problem to an abstract, quantifiable simplification” (Hughes 166). If society allows for a simple exploration of a solution, the forces of technology and nature will not dispute each other. However, …show more content…
The impact over time benefits the development of our environment, as well as the well-being of all life on earth. Nuclear technology drastically diminishes carbon dioxide emissions. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, nearly 800 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions are avoided due to the generation of nuclear energy compared to any other energy source used in the United States. Overall, the appropriate use of nuclear technology is a clean and efficient way of generating electricity with as little impact on the environment as possible. In addition, nuclear power is sustainable for a significant amount of time. Since nuclear energy is highly efficient, there are benefits to using this source compared to sources that may run out in the next few centuries. Uranium is extremely abundant throughout all regions of the world; this technology source could be a well-suited option for many countries. However, some countries and culture may not have a strong familiarity with maintaining and regulating this serious power. The difference of where this technology is currently used most likely has a correlation with how companies and governments maintain these strict regulations in order to ensure safety for their communities. Also, since the abundancy is high, Uranium is predicted to last thousands of years,
