To create an accurate standard based curriculum, selection of instructional methods and content after evaluation is required as well as a good understanding of content standards. Content standards should lead all instruction, due to they were created to gradually refined understanding and skill. Selecting content that reflects the student’s interests and needs allows the material to flow with the students’ previous experiences in earlier grades and with the experiences gained outside of the school. Overall to offer student’s a successful, relevant, standard driven program instruction should be a resultant from these four components; assessment driven, student driven, knowledge driven, and community driven.
When most people hear assessments, they think of them only as a method for teachers to determine grades. Assessments are a multi-step process that helps the educator gather proof of student learning, understanding, and skills to inform instruction and deliver advice to the students to improve learning. An assessment driven program allows student to use assessment as a means for improvement. They assist in learning, show individual improvement, and help to evaluate programs. When determining what knowledge students should gather from the curriculum, the pieces of knowledge can be judged according to order of importance. You have general knowledge, which is knowledge that is worth being aware of. There is knowledge that is geared to be import for job performance, which is knowledge that is important to know, and be able to do. There is also lifelong knowledge that which can be considered permanent knowledge. To openly understand what is meant by permanent knowledge, consider it to be that which is relevant for students to be able to blend into their lives and show in a meaningful way, even years after they leave your program.
Last is the component of creating a standard based curriculum for your Career and Technical Education Program is community driven. Involving the community in learning activities allow students to hear and obtain information directly from the members of the community. Educators should strive to embed many unique activities that occur in the community. This interaction gives the student a chance to hear from guest speakers and project facilitators while getting a chance to gain a mentor or role model, who can provide them with an abundance of information and
