Brian Cannon provided a lecture on Gerry-manderring and the effects of it. Gerry-manderring is when a political figure running for office changes the voting lines in their district for their benefit. Gerry-manderring is legal in the United States as long as it used politically, if it is used racially it is considered illegal. Dr. Cannon provided us with examples in which political and racial Gerry-manderring is pretty much the same thing. Dr. Cannon works for Virginia 2021 a company that informs people on voting rights. One of the goals of Virginia 2021 is to make political gerrymandering illegal as well. Throughout Dr. Cannon’s lecture we were able to discover the ways in which politics has changed he presented us with different graphs on how liberal and moderate congress and the senate has changed over the years. As the chart got closer to the present time there is less and less moderate people. Presenting that we as a nation are changing our mentality in politics. Dr. Cannon also pointed out that because of our regulation of voting for congress and senate we are constantly electing the same person into office. He also stated that less and less people vote during state elections compared to federal elections. When in reality they should be campaigning to teach the youth about actual politics while they are retaining education. The majority of the time that people vote they are voting because said politician said they would work hard to change something the voter really wants to see changed. Voters are not educated in what to look for in candidates and hardly even know what it means to be part of the political parties. As a nation Socrates would probably look at us and discuss that we have no guardians because our people aren’t really educated. Those who believe they are rulers in Socrates eyes would not be considered as the best leaders because they failed at their job to share their knowledge with the rest of the people. Currently in the United States each state has a history program in which they require all school to teach children about the basic history facts.
