However, what is language? In a lecture given by Dr. Cook, she describes human language as consisting of five specific properties; it is compositional, has a hierarchical system, encompasses …show more content…
A Rogerian therapist is person-centered therapy, developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940’s. Rogers believed that every human being strives for and has the capacity to fulfill his or her potential. This type of therapy provides the clients with empathy and unconditional positive regard (Good Therapy , 2014). “Intelligence, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience. It is not merely book learning, a narrow academic skill, or test-taking smarts. Rather it reflects a broader and deeper capability for comprehending our surroundings—“catching on,” “making sense” of things, or “figuring out” what to do” (Nisbett, et al., 2012). Considering that Eliza was a manmade product, an assumption can be made that all of the properties of language is embedded in the coding, allowing the machine to respond to my statements just as a human would. In fact, “when the original ELIZA first appeared in the 60 's, some people actually mistook her for human” (Wallace, 1960 …show more content…
However, she lacks, the use of semantics, she doesn’t seem to understand feelings, when I ask her “How are you Eliza? She would reply with “why are you interested in whether I am or am not?” (Wallace, 1960 's). She can create sentences using the algorithm embedded in her system by Wallace, but she didn’t understand what was being said. The purpose of language is to communicate; unfortunately Eliza was not showing any signs of communication, there for it can be said that she doesn’t not speak a language.
Composing a series of numbers may be a form of language, but if those numbers have no meaning, then it is merely gibberish. Eliza’s intelligence was limited by what she had been programed with, inhibiting her from a sense of growth. Which unfortunately shows that there is a lack of intelligence and lack of language. Eliza’s main problem was that has had no access to the emotional aspect of what the conversation pertains, she responded with a generic template created by the programmer. She showed no signs of the ability to take the emotions of others and generating a creative response to
