This case-control study utilizes a blinded investigation protocol to obtain data from three geographically different medical schools records. Data consists of professional behavior records and grades of 235 physician graduates who were disciplined by one of the medical boards in the United States between 1990 and 2003. These case-physicians are matched to two control-physicians who did not undergo disciplinary actions, who graduated the same year and were in the same specialty to prevent sample bias. In the study the most prevalent violations by a physician leading to medical board disciplinary action included the use of drugs, alcohol, unprofessional conduct, conviction of a crime and negligence3. The study found there is a direct correlation of unprofessional behavior in medical school and disciplinary action by medical boards. According to the results
