Event planners spend their time either in the office or out at the events. (“Meeting, Convention, and Event Planners,” 2015, Work Environment section, para. 1 and 2) This career is very demanding, it requires the planner to be flexible and able to solve problems. In the Journal of Research, Donna Fletcher, Julie Dunn, and Rosemary Prince write, “To practicing professionals, knowledge skills are apparently the least important skills for entry level event managers.” (Fletcher, Dunn, & Prince, 2009, Conclusion section, para. 2) They point out how students that come freshly out of college with only knowledge, but no experience are faced with difficulties when trying to enter the event planning business because employers want those who have had experience. (Fletcher et al., 2009.) They also claim that when researching what specific skills are needed they came up with, “The social skills type category included interpersonal and human relations skills; the personal skills type category included self management and personal work habit skills; the knowledge skills type category included academic, conceptual and analytical skills.” (Fletcher et al., 2009, Results section, para. 8) Throughout this article it is apparent that those who are successful in this industry are college educated. The courses I am taking at CCU for my major will help me prepare for event planning because I have learned through class work that has required me to engage and think. In my Introduction to Hospitality class we have done a semester long group project that involved students planning every aspect of a high school reunion. We worked together in groups to gather information and put together a presentation that showed all of the work we did. This is the type of learning that will help to prepare me for event planning. Outside of the classroom, I can prepare for a career of event planning by joining any of the organizations that CCU has to offer that may involve me having to plan group meetings or group
