Mission is an essential part of an organization and may often be presented as a written statement (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). Information about what an organization does, their values and their goals for the future should be included in the mission and vision statements (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). A mission statement, as defined in the textbook Principles of Management, is “a statement of purpose describing who the company is and what it does” (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). A mission statement may be created for personal use, for a family, or for an organization (Covey, 1989). This mission statement must be understandable, relevant, and well communicated (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, …show more content…
The first step in this process is to identify the ideas and actions that have worked for the company, your family, or yourself in the past. The Principles of Management textbook suggests, for personal use, that one should write down four to five of these successes that have happened within the past few years (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). The second step is to recognize the values that matter most to whomever the mission statement is being written for. These values should define the organization, family, or yourself as well as show your main concerns (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). Make a list of all the values you think should be included, then reduce the ideas to five or six values that are most significant (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). If creating a mission statement for personal use, you may want to narrow down the list even further to one main value, if possible. The third step is to “make a list of the ways you could make a difference” (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). For an organization, this may include the community in which they operate, their stakeholders, the environment, or the world altogether. A personal mission may not be as far reaching, but could include family, friends, co-workers, employers and could still include community, the environment, or the world. The fourth step is to determine the goals for the organization, family, or yourself. Make a list …show more content…
BHAG includes five principles from which you should set your personal long term goal. First you must have a clear understanding of yourself. The second principle has three parts. You must first figure out what you care most about, what drives you. Then, “what drives your economic logic” (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). The final step of this principle is to explain why you are special and different from others. The third principle is to set a time frame for the goal to be achieved. This goal, being a more complex goal, should have a time frame between ten and thirty years (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). Principle four is when you start to put the goal together. The goal should be “clear, compelling, and easy to grasp” (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). Lastly, the goal should incorporate what you value and your purpose for achieving the goal (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). Once the BHAG process has been completed it may be incorporated into your mission
