Falls are a major problem when it comes to the elderly population. Each year, 2.8 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries(Centers For Disease Control and Prevention.2016). To prevent further accidents in the home for patients you can put bars on the walls, have slip resistant shoes, remove rugs, have adequate lighting, and place furniture where it won 't be in the way.When an older person is living at home medical professionals have to make sure it is a safe as possible for them. A patient may be coming home from a hospital stay, they may have had previous falls, or their vision may be impaired. Home safety fall prevention interventions are more effective when conducted by occupational therapists (Clemson et al. 2014). It is needed aside from other medical professions because it solely focuses on a patient 's functional stability and how well they operate in their own environment. This is important for the elderly population because older people don 't want to be subject to change and they would want to stay in their own environments so when injuries occur assessments need to be taken to help them build themselves back up or transition them elsewhere. Occupational therapists also are needed in palliative care where patients are dying.
