For something to be a profession it must be a paid occupation, especially one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification (“profession”). A teacher fits all of the requirements. Being a teacher is a paid occupation, even though many think they should be paid more. After college, many teachers are required to get extra training and education in their field of study. According Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession (2007) standard 7, professionalism is when a teacher understands and follows ethics, seeking professional development, and agents of change to improving teaching quality. Once a teacher accomplishes these goals then they can consider themselves a professional. Qualifications are a major part in becoming a teacher. Educators must pass all of the required exams and must have the certifications before they can even start teaching (Ohio Standards, 2007). Appropriate clothing is a good way to start. Since teachers are working with children they need to understand that some clothing will look unprofessional in a parent’s perspective while others items will not. Using appropriate language is a way to be professional. Cursing is not a good way to interact with students. It is very unprofessional and should stay away from classrooms. Teachers should never accept a friend request form a student on social media. They need to keep their accounts on private. It is important that teachers are professional inside and outside of the classroom. They will never know when they will run into a student outside of class. Collaborating and communicating with other teachers, parents, and students is outlined in the Ohio Standards for Teaching Profession (2007) standard 6. I am a volunteer teacher for a Sunday school and I am always collaborating with other teachers to find a better way to teach a lesson or ideas to get a stubborn student involved. I contact parents and tell them what their child is learning in class so they know I am here to make their child successful. I talk to students one on one if they are misbehaving and my expectations for them. There is no possible way for a teacher to be successful if they do not collaborate. It is part of their career to learn and grow from other teachers. There is always an opportunity to grow when teaching. People may have better ideas than you
