Individuals who are successful in their careers and personal lives are often looked to by their colleagues to see what qualities they possess that makes them successful. Self-management is a structured program of multiple techniques that aid in making the personal behavioral changes so an individual develops needed skills that will lead to their career success. A person who is self-managed is one who, on their own, knows what steps to take to achieve their desired goal. Studies like Nesbit’s found that to become self-managed, an individual must go through a process to learn, practice, and ultimately master a skill that will aid them in accomplishing their tasks (2012). The key to effective self-management is to constantly evaluate one’s own performance with their current skillset. If there is skill lacking, it is identified and a learning plan is established to acquire the skill. This self-managed process is always repeated to identify, learn and master new skills that are needed to accomplish new work tasks. For the workplace, it is essential to master these skills to be productive and be seen as a reliable, and competent employee. Laud & Johnson found that “the utilization of several career competencies supports the concept that multiple tactics are usually employed by individuals to advance their careers” (2012 p. 234).
