Care is defined by the interlacing of two components, work and emotion (Kroger, 2009). A relationship that is caring features an imbedded understanding that the relationship is between two human beings, a level of concern and responsibility is placed on the individual in the care role, and the individual who is experiencing care is in some way receiving a service or benefiting from the relationship. The notion of care itself often leads to a hierarchy, with the person caring on top and the cared for on the bottom. This dichotomy perpetrates the idea that a level of dependence and reliance exists for the person being cared for. If the ideals of interdependence are combined with the concepts of care there is hope that the relationship between the individual being cared for and the care provider would transform into a mutually benefiting relationship. If the dynamic was to include interdependency the cared for individual and the caring individual would split the power, creating an equal give and take relationship between all parties. Independence closely relates to feelings of self-sufficiency, and empowerment. Relating interdependence to the concept of independence is important to ensure the dignity, and respect of person hood for all individuals. By ensuring that interdependence is respected in relation to the theme of independence one can reimagine independence as a guaranteed experience, rather than one that needs to be fought for. It is important to note that all individuals, regardless of ability, likely experience a lack of independence at some point in their lifetime. Understanding that the outcomes from one individuals experience with independence are directly related to another individual’s experience with independence will create a standard of normality that has the potential to reach all individuals, not just those who are on the privileged end of the
