Teachers should find ways to motivate students in reading especially if there are difficulties and challenges being presented. This can hold true by the way the school’s curriculum is written for instruction. Since it can be tough to hold students’ interest or their attention when reading magazines or books it could be beneficial to give small rundown or synopsis to keep students engaged. Shaka Senghor’s book had components and elements to hold interest of students such as: jail; weapons; drug money; and street life. Each one of those sections were detailed. Those elements kept their attention because they could relate to it due to the fact the students could relate to those elements. The derivatives of those elements include low income and poverty levels in reference to the student and author’s life. Students were able to review a snippet of short film about Shaka Senghor’s life two days before his visit to the school. Students were able to create Q and A’s for Mr. Senghor after his lecture. Students were allowed one week to read his book in order to complete and participate in the assignments created by the
