The Watchtower of the South is the home of Fire and houses the Elemental Salamanders. The Watchtower of the North is the home of Earth and houses the Elemental Gnomes. In the Southern Hemisphere those two are reversed.
The Watchtowers are protectors of that area, that is where we call the Elements from, when we are casting our circles and performing rituals.
In Christian influenced magic traditions, they are understood to be the Archangels Uriel, Raphael, Michael, and Gabriel.

This is actually a preliminary ritual to purify space and call upon the guardians of the four quarters, similar to casting the magic circle in Wicca. The Watchtowers were among the Golden Dawn concepts introduced into Wicca by its founder Gerald Gardner. The complicated tablets and Enochian names were largely abandoned, but Wicca retained the Watchtowers as "the four cardinal points, regarded as guardians of the Magic Circle". They are usually mentioned during the casting of the circle. In a conservative tradition such as Gardnerian or Alexandrian Wicca the invocation of the Watchtowers begins in the east.
In Modern Wicca the Watchtowers are symbolic structures, assotiated with the four directions, which are called upon to guard over a circle during a ritual, and are dismissed when the ceremony is complete.
The word Watchtowers for me means some invisible force, placed in each direction, that is watching over me when I am performing the ritual. It can be Elementals, or it can be Angels. In each direction an Angel or Elemental should be evoked, that is connected to this direction and this element. I look at them as a protection.
