For example, the American Federation of Labor was created as a skilled, craft union in the late 19th century (Doc F). The leader of this union, Samuel Gompers, made it clear that the AFL desired to gain the rights to organize as a group, increased wages, workers compensation, and many other labor related rights. There is less attention on the rights and safety of the workers and more on what is being accomplished.
