The article I chose to read and summarize for this assignment is called “The Intriguing Role of Spanish Language Vocabulary Knowledge in Predicting English Reading Comprehension.” I chose an article that was close to the grade level I was going to teach next year and I wanted to learn more about student’s vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension in students that first learned Spanish and or English and are getting brought up in a bilingual home. This article connects to my practice of teaching 2nd grade next year because if I have any students who are growing up bilingual at home I will learn about their vocabulary knowledge and how they will be at their reading comprehension.
Educators should read this study because it will be beneficial to learn more about bilingual student’s L1 and L2 vocabulary knowledge and their literacy skills. Also find out if there are any effects on their language skills if they were first taught Spanish or English literacy instruction.

Spanish-instructed students were faster at reading the Spanish words. Spanish had the dominance in overall for the oral language skills. However, oral language skills for both English and Spanish were both below grade level at the time of testing. Spanish was at a low third grade and English at a low second grade level. Looking at the data in table 5, the English-instructed students outperformed the Spanish-instructed students on English oral language and reading comprehension.
