As in the story is portrayed Fortunato as the fool for being lured into Montresor’s trap for revenge. Fortunato is dressed in a jester costume of a tight-fitting colorful striped dress, and a conical cap and bells. He is also heavily intoxicated making his behavior and judgment making a fool of himself. The costume amuses Montresor towards the end when he the jingles of the bell, as he dies as a fool. I think Poe dress him in a fool costume to foreshadow Montresor future actions or he thinks He is a fool to be conceited as a man to be so sure of the finer things in life. Fortunato’s surrounding high-class society to think so highly of himself of the knowledge of fine arts, wine, and jewelry makes him a fool. Fortunato feels offended that someone can be better than him at wine tasting so he says, “You have been imposed upon; and as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado” (109).This weakness that makes Fortunato gullible to Montresor’s trap for revenge. Montresor on the hand is dressed in all black with his face covered in a black silk mask with a roquelaire (a knee-length cloak). His costume is very strange for a festive event such as a carnival, which indicates he has his own reason to attend (his revenge). His costume adds due to the mystery of his revenge is really an unknown. He dresses to disguise himself as night which signifies as
