To start, Amir’s first step to the flowering of a confident man is prominent when he stands up to his father and decides to pursue his own passion in creative writing. Baba boasts, “Amir is going to be a great writer” (139). His ability to chose his own path is a contrast from following his father’s expectations as he takes firm and confident action. Also, Assef makes a reappearance when Amir goes to afghanistan. “Suddenly my cheeks were stinging and the guard was tossing my beard up and down with his hand, giggling” (276).
