A key to achieving the American Dream is receiving aid from friends and mentors. In The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch talks about what he did and what he learned throughout his life. Randy applied to Carnegie Mellon and wasn’t accepted, but his professor, Andy van Dam, helped him go there. If his professor hadn’t recommended him, Randy would have gotten a job and he would have gotten a job and he would have lost many opportunities. Randy Pausch told his audience about brick walls, which are what prevent a person from reaching his or her goal. He said that brick walls show how much a person wishes to achieve a goal. This is shown when Randy wanted to go on a zero gravity flight, but he had to be willing to overcome a brick wall, becoming a journalist. He was willing to quit being a professor and become a journalist to go. In the end, his determination allowed him to go on the flight. Similarly, to achieve the American Dream, the pursuer must be determined. Glenn Lopis, in his article Why Most People Will Not Achieve the American Dream, speaks of the difficulty in pursuing the American Dream. “It’s a time when the pursuit for opportunity is no longer a commodity, but a valuable and precious jewel that is only available for those who rightly earn it.” Earning the American Dream requires determination.
