On June, 1812, Captain Charles Roberts gathered his men, 3 men from the Royal Artillery, 47 British Soldiers of the 10th Royal Veteran Battalion, 150 Canadian fur traders and voyageurs, 300 Ojibwa or Ottawas and 110 Sioux, Menominee and Winnebago. Captain Robert received orders from Major General Isaac Brock, to cancel the attack. Brock continued to correspond with Captain Robert to focus on defending St. Joseph Island. Robert made the executive decision to attack Fort Mackinac because he feared that the first nations would to decide to move on and stop helping the British if they were not allowed to attack soon. Robert knew that he would not be able to attack the fort front ally, he did not have the artillery aboard his ship, he knew that he had to land his troops and attack from the rear or one of the flanks. Fort Mackinac was poorly equipped, Lieutenant Porter Hanks and his 61 gunmen had only 7 guns. Captain Roberts started secretly at 3:00 am in the morning, he ordered Dousman to inform the people that they needed to the west side of the island. They were told that they would be protected by the British against the “savages”. The British were stationed a quarter mile away from the fort, by the time Hanks was notified, the British had set up with their first nations companions around the fort. Hank was prepared to fight when the town’s people convinced Hanks to surrender, so no more lives were wasted. Roberts took the fort without taking or losing a single life, after he took the fort he let the American troops go
