At first, when I read the Code of Hammurabi, I thought the law and the punishment are too awful. As I kept reading the law, I found that without being strict, the Babylonians under King Hammurabi could not unify well. The reason why the punishment by the law was awful is to make people fear even committing crimes. The intensity of punishments by social position could seem merciless with resentment. However, on the other hand, I think it helped to settle a status system and unify Mesopotamia automatically since the Babylonians were pressed by their king’s severe law. For example, Egyptians were self-sustained people who lived in the fertilized land without a caste or status system, unlike other nations. However, the major reason why they declined in the 2810s B.C. was because they did not have strong rulers and rules. A good portion of the code says that it helps to produce the next generation, in other words, growing up more population. However, I think these punishments which showed the severe solution of committing crimes do not match with their code of family life for reproducing and population. Half of the criminals that put into death might be men who can produce the next generation. So, I would adopt a prison system like today’s and let it be more seriously separates criminals by punishments, not just pushing them in a death
