A survey by the National Institute found that 49% of parents talk to their children about video games they are playing, 51% do not (Nakaya). Based on this statistic, it is evident that children are not getting the supervision needed. Most video games played nowadays have some sort of violence linked in them. Children are not being told that these actions are morally wrong. Media violence is not something that is governmentally regulated in the US. A voluntary industry system, Motion Picture Association of America or Entertainment Software Rating Board, rate video games, movies, shows, and other medias. These various medias are becoming more and more violent. People are beginning to accept violence as a means of entertainment without stopping and thinking about what their brain is absorbing (Nakaya). Over 40 years ago, former Federal Communications Commissioner, Nicholas Johnson, stated, “All television is educational television. The only question is, what is it teaching?” (Pearson, Wagner). Society seems to be unaware of the degree of severity they are allowing themselves to walk through. The people and government of the U.S. need to manage media and teach good instead of teaching harm. Little do people know, they are being negatively affected, especially children and teenagers. Violence is increasing, as is violence in media. It is estimated that one has viewed 200,000 murders on television by the age of 18 (Cornwell). Watching 200,000 murders clearly sparks some sort of aggression inside oneself. Even critics believe that media violence is causing more aggression (Cornwell). It is clear that media violence affected Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two teens who were inspired by a video game to commit a violent act at Columbine High School.
