This theory supports the idea that the leader must support, help, and motivate his/her worker to achieve their goals and give them objectives to achieve.
To lead motivate and support a group of people working towards the same goal is an enormous responsibility if done correctly. The Path Goal Theory guides leaders on how to accomplish that task. This theory sees people floundering in their spare time and instead of calling them bums or lazy, shows them how to connect this perceived “free time” with the major goals that have yet to be accomplished. The leader should help the group identify and make their goals and eliminate any obstacles the group may face thereby increasing the amount of power that they have. Also, the leader should offer appropriate rewards throughout the groups time together while working towards the goal. This theory is based off four different types of leadership that can be chosen based on the situation. Supportive, directive, participative and achievement-oriented leadership are the types of leadership utilized throughout the Path Goal Theory. Path Goal is one of the simpler leadership theories we talk about. Focus on clarifying the paths to goal attainment and keep all of the group concentrating on those paths. Resources the company will need to begin working with Path Goal would more than likely be a few people who are familiar and skilled with the four major types of leadership and could also critique your management while they practice working with the different types. More material may also be necessary if the goals for attainment are better met if visual aid increases motivation. When project groups work together or they hang it near a common area as a reminder, you could construct a checklist or outline for the goals of the group. In order to market this idea to new companies you’d have to first establish their need for direction among their employees and a need for better styles of leadership among those holding management or leadership positions. Marketing this idea to companies and offering to teach them everything they would need to know about it and then assisting them with practicing the points shouldn’t be difficult because most companies have similar weakness like this, especially when it comes to projects.
