Because he was the leader of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, George Washington became a highly respected individual following Great Britain’s defeat. As a result of his celebrity, everyone involved in this event agreed to elect him to be chairman, a position which enabled him to serve as a mediator. Having him actively participate in the Constitutional Convention legitimatized this event, for he was an outstandingly prominent figure during the struggle for independence and therefore an American icon.
