They saw what caused the breaches and started fixing the breaches in areas where Hurricane Katrina had already gone through. The levees were reconstructed with the most non-erosive material found to prepare for future hurricanes. As for the floodwalls, they were modified to accommodate for concrete T-walls to be placed with it. There was no possible way of remaking the existing walls and so they adjusted to change the openings of the canals. This resulted in a new approach that was to be taken while hurricanes happened. The new restrictions allowed for safe conditions even when there is no natural disaster taken place. As they were analyzing the breaches, they realized that they needed a better Hurricane Protection System (HPS). This brought attention to the entire national incase such treacherous event was to happened again. As a result, they were assigned to build a better HPS that could withstand Category level 5 disasters like Katrina because previous systems could only handle level 3. The most catastrophic on was Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Katrina caused havoc to the point of being put in a Category of level 5 and later in to level 3. Category Level 3 was previous felt by the people of New Orleans but this was a higher calamity. Afterwards, Hurricane Katrina was gone and they began repairing the system. This allowed for development for the USACE as they had changed their policy to not have this natural disaster occur again. To this day, they still discuss ways of improving their methods to make the protective system better. In New Orleans, the Hurricane Protection System failed and breaches in different areas. This was because of the mechanical failures that occurred during Katrina and were located on the equipment such as levees and floodwalls. Both of these had breaches due to the soil erosion and pressure of water from hitting it. Consequently, U.S Army Corps of Engineers was sent out to analyze, fix and improve the damages caused by the breaches. This resulted in a new approach that was to be taken, while hurricanes happened, to make safe the inhabitants and new designs that were made. In addition, the data collected by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers made the evaluation of the Hurricane Protection System much more in-depth.
