Genetically engineered meats have recently become a big issue in society. Many believe Genetically engineered (GE) foods, including meat are a good, safe way of consuming meats, and changing meats to be better• and more nutritional many others believe GE meats should be banned. Communities are worried for their health, and the health of other naturally grown animals and are trying to put a stop to GE meats• (GMO Compass, 2006).
Genetic engineering is also known as bioengineered or biotechnology, it refers to making artificial changes in the genes of animals, plants, and even humans. It is a method of introducing certain traits into animals (Dr. Ron Epstein, 1996). Genes are the chemical codes that determine the physical natures of all living organisms. It could lead to environmental, financial, and health issues around the world. If genetically engineered animals breed with naturally bread animal’s serious genetic problems could occur, and the ecosystem may be disrupted (Dr. Ron Epstein, 1996). Another serious social risk with genetic animals is creating new, and unknown viruses. Genetic material hosts viruses in all species, the virus breaks apart, and recombines itself with the genetic material, creating new viruses. If this happens with a genetically engineered animal the new virus created will be made of genetically modified genes, meaning that there may be no natural cure for this virus, thus killing animals, plants and even humans (GMO Compass, 2006). Genetically engineering animals can be a very expensive process, and not always is the money made back. Genetically engineered meat is often not sold at much of a higher price than regular meat. This can have a huge social affect, causing the community to spend a lot of sometimes-unnecessary money, not always making it back (Dr. Ron Epstein,
