In 1987, The United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development released the report named Our Common Future. This was also termed the Brundtland Report and introduced what is now the most widely recognized definition of Sustainable Development (WCED,1987). Sustainable development is not a foreign term and is used interchangeably with the concept of economic development. However, this notion is wrong as sustainable development has a wider definition which encompasses the environmental, social and institutions aspects of development.(WCED,1987).Many citizens may not be familiar with the term; however, our actions speak volumes and contributes to the negative or positive effects associated with it. “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”(World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). This has caused many debates in the differentiation of the terms “needs” and “wants” in society. Societies will have many issues that have to be addressed in order for it to function in harmony and promote sustainability. Governments have a vital role in alleviating poverty, making education accessible, creating jobs for the country, and breaking the social division that exist within a society(WCED,1987). This concept appears to be ideal in theory rather than practice. These problems can be tackled through various programs, financial aids, and approaches but society as we know it wouldn’t be the same without them. Democracy or communism, the state or individual, and civil or public which either side one is on there will be the existence of them.
