ALARA is an acronym that means as low as reasonably achievable. This technique is used to protect patients by giving the sonographer control over the strength of the ultrasound. By aiming to use the lowest possible strength the sonographer keeps this in mind through out the entire procedure. In general the TI and MI values should always be monitored and always began in the lowest possible setting. Knowing that heat is an issue if a patient already has an elevated temperature then minimizing scan times should be a priority. Ultrasound is meant to be used for diagnostic purposes, and with that in mind it should not be used for producing souvenir photos or videos because this could cause harm that is unnecessary. This includes the training required for educational purposes, frequent and repeated exposure can cause harm and should be avoided.
