In America, a large percent of discrimination occurs against minority groups like African Americans, Latinos, and Asians. However out of these various minority groups, African Americans are the most affected minority group by racial discrimination. A great deal of this racial prejudice is because the government is not taking preventative measure to stop racial prejudice and segregation. Ever since the great migration, African Americans and other minority groups moved northward from their homes because of unsatisfactory economic opportunities and harsh segregationist laws, where they settled in communities with similar races. These minority communities are underdeveloped from an educational and socioeconomic standpoint causing minorities to live in impoverished areas facing racial prejudice. The United States government is not providing financial relief to these minority communities, and in turn results in poor segregated communities, who are urged to affiliate with similar races to survive. Instead of local city councils financially assisting improvised areas, some are accused of redlining, the practice of arbitrarily denying or limiting financial services to specific neighborhoods, generally because its residents are people of color or are poor. According to the Washington Post, approximately 400-500 police brutality related deaths occurred in the year 2015 alone. These extreme cases of police brutality on minorities is not just unconstitutional, but it is also inhumane. No person should be killed over unnecessary ignorant mistakes or racial profiling. However these cases do exist, one of which that tragically ended the life of an African American woman in Texas. Sandra Bland, a 28 year old, African American woman died in a Texas jail cell after reportedly being arrested on traffic violation accounts on July 10. Sandra Bland was stopped by a Texas police officer for failing to signal a lane change. In a series of events recorded by the officer’s dash cam, the conversation became heated, and violent. The officer was seen smashing her head against the ground violently, and then she was placed in handcuffs and she was arrested. The conversation reportedly escalated once the officer asked Sandra Bland to put out her cigarette, to which she had the right to refuse, and she cooperated. The officer had no right to use such violent force on this woman, nor did he have the right to arrest her on charges of aggressive battery when he clearly was the initiator of the harassment. Although failing to signal during a lane change is illegal, the police officer should have given her a warning during the traffic
