Many question if whether Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Study is considered an experiment. To be considered an experiment, the study must follow a strict process of scientific research. It must include an independent variable, dependent variable, random assignment and a definite hypothesis (Weiten, 2013, p. 65). …show more content…
46). The Stanford Prison Study does incorporate an independent variable, which was the random selection of the prison roles of either a guard or prisoner by flipping a coin (Weiten, 2013). “A dependent variable is the variable that is affected by the manipulation of the independent variable” (Weiten, 2013, p. 46). Zimbardo’s study does incorporate a dependent variable, which was the effect on their social behavior given the positional power of being a guard or no power as the prisoner (Hock, 2012). “A Hypothesis is a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variable” (Weiten, 2013,p. 40). Zimbardo’s study does not incorporate because “the researchers did not formulate any specific hypothesis” (Hock 2012). “Random assignment of subjects occurs when all subjects have an equal chance of being assigned to any group or condition in the study” (Weiten, 2013, p. 47). Zimbardo’s study is effectively incorporates random assignment because the position of either guard or prisoner was randomly selected by using a coin flip to determine the roles (Hock 2012). I believe Zimbardo’s research …show more content…
My hypothesis would be playing violent video games create violent actions in young children. In my experiment, children from the ages 10-13 are randomly selected to play violent video games. They are then moved to a room filled other kids and are asked to play with a set of toys. Some of toys included in the room are balls, a boxing bag, toy guns, and a Barbie set. Scientist then observe the action of the kids and see if violent action occur because of this genre of video games. The control group would be a group of children playing a room with these toys without playing the video game. I could alter the independent variable by selecting a different type of video game. I may select the game online checkers instead of Grand Theft Auto or (G.T.A). I think the results would be different because one game is violent and other is not. Those who play online checkers would play less violent than those who played
