Hurricanes are enormous storms which have winds exerting great force upward and inward at very great speeds like 100 to 200mph. Every hurricane can last for over a week. A hurricane is a bit different from the usual cyclone. Cyclone winds have a very low speed of 9km. Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are all the same but with a different name.

The wind speed of Hurricane Katrina increased from 75mph to 125mph in few hours’ time. According to reports, Hurricane Katrina reached maximum wind speeds on the morning of Sunday August 28th that is over 170mph. It has become so powerful and went from a category 1 to category 5 storm in 4 days. Category 5 hurricanes are considered to be extremely dangerous.
The main reason for the occurrence of hurricane is unknown but some scientists claim that global warming is partially to blame for the power and endurance of Hurricane Katrina.

People who had been affected found it very hard to reconstruct their shattered lives. In some cases, people lost their valuable documents such as study certificates, birth certificates, insurances and other licenses. Most of the victims did not have their medical insurance which would have helped them while receiving treatment.
Ten years after Hurricane Katrina hit the United States, the rebuilding is still in progress. Thousands of homes have been repaired. A total of $160 billion was spent on the recovery.
Since these are all natural disasters, we can make ourselves prepared and can avoid such damage by learning emergency plans, warning signals, evacuation routes and finding places for shelter well before hand.
