It is easy to say that the entire play is based upon the theme of revenge. When his father’s ghost claims that it was his own brother that poisoned him in the ear, it sends Hamlet into a fit of intense rage. This is where Hamlet receives his need to revenge his father by killing his uncle. When in comparison to modern law, Hamlet’s thirst and actions towards revenge are scenes as barbaric but clever. At first he acts sullen and angry toward everyone, but then hatches half a plan to begin his revenge for his father’s untimely demise. He takes it upon himself to pretend to be insane just to prove that his uncle is guilty. He acts as if everything is right in the world even though his inner thoughts are the opposite of his sunny disposition. He goes as far as denying his love for Ophelia just to cover his act of going mad. It is when Ophelia was brought into Hamlet’s agenda that Polonius gets involved, he sees that Hamlet had a relationship of some sort with his daughter and believes that he is lovesick. Unfortunately, because his involvement in the investigation of why Hamlet goes mad, he gets himself killed. The acting aspect of a play is crucial to the structure of the plot. It is the use of both the words and the actions of the actors that contribute a structural aspect to the play. Before the play within the play begins, Hamlet acts as if everything is care free. He is excited to see the play that he has asked the actors to perform for the court audience which includes his Uncle who he believes to be guilty of killing his father in cold blooded murder. He jumps into the lap of Ophelia and shows her affection in front of everybody, behaving like he had not scorned her earlier. His mother and the rest of the court sees this as well. As the play within the play begins, Hamlet waits to see the reaction of his Uncle because of the content of the play. In the play, a King is in a garden minding his own business and resting on a bench. Then, as the King is asleep, the king’s brother sneaks up behind the king. He takes out a bottle of poison and pours it into the king’s ear and proceeds to steal the crown and put it on his head, giving himself the power. This is the same situation that the ghost of Hamlet’s father claimed happened to him and how he was murdered. The ghost also told Hamlet to leave his mother alone even though Hamlet saw marrying his uncle as a betrayal.
