Goal Creating a connection between literacy experiences during carpet time and the literacy activity.
Objective The lesson plan designed is meant to further develop skills in the areas of turn-taking, sharing spaces and materials, and self-regulation (to include the use of impulse control).
Standards Included
As listed in the TN 0-48 month Early Learning Standards, children will demonstrate persistence, self-regulation, receptive language, reading foundational skills, operations and algebra, as well as art. Throughout this lesson children should also engage in representational language skills.
Materials
Book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, plain white paper, markers, and crayons.

The activity done here will give them the opportunity to further the knowledge that was acquired with the story. Beginning with the caterpillar’s first apple, the discussion leads with healthy eating choices. By Saturday the caterpillar has eaten enough junk food to get a belly ache. Begin using open ended questions such as, “What do you think made his stomach hurt? Did he make good food choices? What could he have done differently? When he goes into his cocoon, does he come out any different?” These questions are open-ended and give the children a chance to use problem solving skills, as well as explore cause and effect concepts. Remember to keep the conversation and questions at an age appropriate level. Throughout this time period, the children are creating their own hungry caterpillar. Encourage them to draw some food choices they think would be good options. Then they can count their food, and see if they made the same amount as he ate in the
