Of those, 67 percent believed that President Nixon had participated in the Watergate cover-up.”(Senate.gov). This shows the disapproval of President Nixon, and the distrust against him. While being overlooked because it was within the same time period of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr, the watergate scandal is portrayed as one of the biggest scandals in American history. It is probably the biggest because it happened within our own government which allows no corruption under any circumstance. The scandal left marks among the United States to look back upon, and improve from those mistakes, but this scandal will have forever changed the way society views the government, and how the government runs elections forever. Society will never have the same trust it did under any president due to the fact that they were lied to, and corruption was happening right under their nose. Also government will always run elections different from now on by having tighter regulations among the rules within the election mostly including money, and how it can be used among the campaign, and primaries. Although having mainly negative effects among society, their were some positive effects of the scandal. One being journalism, and how this career completely exploded around his causing young, and intelligent citizens to follow a career of journalism. Another positive effect is special prosecutes provision which helped create an independent counsel to help decide the case, not allowing anyone close to the defendant to take on the case.
