In today’s society, most, if not all of the pirates would be considered alcoholics. Billy Bones had the largest obsession as he asked Jim to slip him some rum, even after the doctor told him to stay away from alcohol. The alcohol give Jim, the squire, and the doctor an advantage throughout the book since they are sober and the pirates are clueless because they’re drunk so frequently. Long John Silver is one of few who don’t have an obsession with alcohol, this gives him the opportunity to outwit many like Jim, the squire, and the doctor. There are rumors about the black spot that Jim overhears since the beginning of the book, but it takes time for him to understand the meaning behind it. When the pirates mutually decide they don’t like their leader and want to get rid of him, they burn a piece of paper until it’s charred with a black spot and they give it to their captain. Both Billy Bones and Long John Silver experience this. The black spot represents the ]little bit of order that the pirates have within their society. Since they are pirates, they are not held accountable for many laws and restrictions that govern a civilized lifestyle. Although, the black spot is the pirates way of ensuring some kind of order within their society. But, the black spot surprisingly also represents some disorder. There is danger for the leader, who is can lose all power but it can bring up violence among all the other pirates. “Now, if I can’t get away no how, and they tip me in the black spot, mind you, it’s my old sea-chest they’re after; you get on a horse-you can, can’t you?” Throughout Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, there are hundreds of things that you could conclude as a symbol from the novel. Many objects throughout all different books have deeper meanings behind them, just like the map, coracle, alcohol, and black spot did in this particular book. A symbol can reveal something to you that you wouldn’t otherwise have figured out. In this novel
