The character Mr. Summers, himself, is a symbol of Irony of evil. According to (123 helpme.com ) “Mr. Summers’ name symbolizes life, but in reality it is he who is in charge of the lottery which instead of giving life to the winner it gives death”. With that being said Mr. Summers’ is a great representation of irony of evil, due to his twisted ways of being part of the lottery by giving the winner death instead of life. Mr. Summers’ is really relaxed while everybody is still gathering around waiting for “the lottery” to begin. “The three legged stool represents the Christian Trinity. Each leg represents God the father, God the son, and the Holy Spirit. The three legged stool hold the black box of death, which is ironic because the Christian Trinity represents purity and holiness.” The Christian religion is a very humble religion, most Christians wouldn’t dare kill anybody, even a group of Christians wouldn’t stone a person to death. The ironic twist is that, sacrificing a person as a group is still wrong even if one person doesn’t have all the guilt to themselves. The three legged stool also symbolizes, religious manipulation. If the stool represents the Holy Trinity and the cross, then why would the villagers be using it for holding the black box on top symbolizing death. Many of these villagers knew that the three legged stool was a religious object, yet still choose to use it for the winner of “ the lottery” to get stoned to death. ““The Lottery” represents any action, behavior, or idea that is passed down from one generation to the next that’s accepted and followed unquestioningly, no matter how illogical, bizarre, or cruel.” “The Lottery” is all about brain washing, these villagers were taught from a very young age that sacrificing and stoning to death is okay.
