Directive leadership behavior is based on initiating structure and the other three (supportive, participative and achievement-oriented) types of leadership behavior are based upon consideration.
The four leadership behavior can be described as follows:
1. Directive leadership: In this leadership behavior, leaders tell the subordinates what is expected to do, how and when to do it, develop schedules and norms, ask to follow rules and regulations, guiding and coordinating the work.
2. Supportive leadership: In this leadership behavior, leaders concern for wellbeing and needs of the subordinates, balances equal treatment with status, creates an open, friendly and approachable climate in the work unit.
3. Participative leadership: In this leadership behavior, leaders share work problems with the followers, includes their opinions and suggestions in decision.

This will reduce follower’s dissatisfaction level and lack of self-confidence. It will also fulfill the need of affiliation and human touch of the followers which will be helpful for them to increase confidence to achieve their goal.
If the task is unstructured, complex, ambiguous and the followers are dogmatic, authoritarian directive leadership will be helpful in this case. Directive leadership style compliments the work by giving guidance and psychological structures for followers. This will help to increase the clarity of the work.
If the task is unclear, ambiguous, inaccurate reward and the followers are autonomous participative leadership style will be appropriate for this situation. It will provide more involvement which will give knowledge about how certain paths leads to certain goal, refine the reward system, reduce the autonomic characteristics of followers.
