Edison and his assistance W.L.K. Dickson were trying to enliven the sound recordings from the phonograph with moving pictures in hopes of boosting the sales of the phonograph. After conducting some experiments, Edison was able to introduce the kinetoscope, a device for viewing moving pictures. In 1877, Edward Muybridge successfully photographed a horse in fast motion using a series of 24 cameras. However, these were all a series of still photos that were viewed in a sequence and Edison wanted something better to represent motion. Edison used the principle of a metal cylinder and had a series of tiny sequential photos attached that would give the illusion of motion when the cylinder spins. After seeing the success of his invention, Edison decides to get a patent for his invention of the kinetographic camera. He was aware that many other inventors during the time were trying to create similar things to his invention, so he decided to get a patent immediately. His patent was granted on August of 1897. From this point, the use of kinetographic camera has changed the world and improved the way people live throughout the …show more content…
During this process of coming up with the appropriate solution, some engineers decide to file a patent application. A patent is a legalized document and an agreement by the federal government that provides the protection of an idea. The patent can allow engineers to prevent others from making, using, or selling their patented invention. It is possible for someone to make an invention using only the patent as a guide since the patent can not include any secrets. The term of a patent is usually 20 years from the date on which it has been issued. There has been many honored engineers in the past including Thomas Edison, that have attained a patent for their invention. Throughout his lifetime, Edison has patented more than a thousand of his inventions. Edison 's most famous patents were the electric lamp, the phonograph, and the kinetographic camera. His contributions to the invention of the electric lamp has provided the world with a dependable, useful, and long lasting source of light. Furthermore, his invention of the phonograph has helped the world by allowing us to record the sound and play it back. Additionally, his invention of the kinetographic camera has revolutionized the world by allowing us to watch picture in motion. Edison decided to patent the electric lamp, the phonograph, and the
