Atticus knows he will not win the case, yet he takes it anyways. The people in the town think it is wrong having a white man defending a black man, although Atticus thinks it is part of his duty. At one point, Atticus states that, “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody…” (Lee 144). One can conclude that he believes everyone is equal no matter the color of his or her skin and everyone should have the right to a fair trial. The last example, why Atticus cared is when he did not get mad at Dill for traveling 300 miles without his parents consent. When he saw Dill the first thing he said was to get food for him, so he was not starving. A fatherly instinct to a boy that is not even his son, only a friend to Jem. An illustration from the book is when Atticus said, “Just hungry, I’ll bet. Atticus’s voice had its usual pleasant dryness” (Lee 188). Here, this shows that he cared for a wandering boy that felt unwanted by his family. In addition to Atticus being caring, he is also very intelligent.
