Togo has a very interesting terrain, it has mountains, unfortunately there is desert’s in Togo. it does however have many small lakes in its region. It’s government in the early 1900’s was invaded by the British and the French. However on April 27, 1960 Togo became independent. It still had constitutional with France, though. After a few years they broke away their UN trusteeship and became fully independent with Olympio as president. On January 13, 1963 Olympio was assassinated, the people that assassinated him were non-commissioned officers, who were dissatisfied with their discharge from the French Army. For a short period a man named Grunitzky came back to Togo to head it as Prime Minister. However in 1967 Gnassingbe Eyadema became the president/dictator. He was the longest serving in the history of Africa, he served 38 years and died in 2005. His son was elected for the new President, and his Togo’s president to today. “(The Fact File Staff)”.
Half of the Togolese people are Christian, many of them being protestants, independent or other Christian communities. There are the Ewe, Kabiye, Moba, and Tem, which is often called Kotokoli. Togo has secular celebrations, some celebrations include January 1, Fete Nationale and April 27, Independence Day. These celebrations open a window for job opportunities, and they attract more tourists. Many meals everyday, are made of a large portion of starch, such as maize, cassava and rice.
