The influence of media on society has grown more and more due to the advancement of technology. It is no doubt that, the media has contributed greatly on influencing how people act, think, and behave. There are a lot of ways that media uses to influence society. They use things like articles in newspapers, magazines, and books. Then we have items like films, sound recordings example music, radios, and television (Perse). We also have the latest technology such as media on the internet and the popular social media. For example, advertising as foundation of the mass media has contributed on influencing social values. Many advertisements are directed towards teenagers who are known to be vulnerable. This in turn exposes them materials not suitable for their age. Most advertisements air negative materials that influence teenagers by depiction of various products, exposing them to many junk food advertisements, as well as sexual and violent images. “Most young people are delicate to companion weight and think that it hard to oppose or even question the predominant advertisement reinforced by the mass media.” This leads to the effects of physical self, emotions and psychological aspect (Perse). In the Tough Guise film, Katz explains the major effects of media on gender. Especially how men feel or describe themselves, such as tough, independent, strong and respected. Other media advertisements have caused men to portray themselves as violent, and other attributes such domestic violence, assault, sexual abuse, and murder. There has also been development on women. They are currently changing their images to look like models and celebrities which does not represent any progress but instead supports a myth of progress, “a deception that decreases complex sociopolitical issues to ordinary individual ones” (Potter).
