The Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition is, “relating to, or being a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from the one which corresponds to the person’s sex at birth”.(MWD) Historically the term “transgender” was used to identify cross-dressers and transvestites (people who wore clothing of the opposite sex). As time progressed the term began to include: FTM (female-to-male) transsexuals; MTF (male-to-female) transsexuals; and trnsgenderists (people who live as the opposite gender, but do not have sex reassignment surgery). Transitioning comes with many problems for transgender youth, but the biggest one is at what age is it socially acceptable for a child to self-identify.
